Blocking/Direction of Action:
Audience Perspective and Character Positioning:
Hi everyone!
In this post, I will be describing the blocking for my film opening. I have really enjoyed putting together the little bird's eye view diagrams, and hope you will too!

Blocking Presentation Sides:
In the Morning Routine Scene, the audience is positioned to create rapport with Summer, the main character. This is done through the use of close-ups and tracking shots that follow her movements, making the audience feel familiar with following this character's story in the film.
The audience even gets a glimpse of her personal life through the use of an OTS shot that conveys a voyeuristic feeling as they see her mum's wedding photo with her new husband and are left to wonder how that makes Summer feel.
In the Packing and Leaving Scene, the audience gets to know Summer's mum as a character, seeing how she is very keen on leaving although she visibly loves her daughter.
Summer feels insignificant and misunderstood, aware that her mum does not fully understand the turmoil of emotions within her created by her parents' divorce. This is conveyed through the lack of close-ups on Summer compared to the medium close-ups on her mum, who seems to be the focus.
When getting inside the car, the audience follows Summer out of the house and inside the car, with her mum being more in the background this time. It is a short take using predominantly long shots that put the audience in the position of the house that is being left behind, conveying a feeling of distance and finality which Summer is also feeling.
In the Car Ride Scene, the audience is positioned more than ever inside Summer's world and mind, as the medium close-ups, close-ups and POV shots allow for Summer's world to become more clear to the audience. The voiceover will help emphasise this rapport that is being created.
The Cosy Sofa Scene is a flashforward that will hook the audience and introduce the male love interest, Lucas. The closeness of the characters conveys a feeling of intimacy and the final close-up to Summer's expression will reinforce the message in the voiceover and introduce the plot more clearly, leaving a cliffhanger.
